Scott Nisley Legislation being introduced today in the U.S. Senate would honor a central Iowa soldier who was killed while serving overseas last fall. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is co-sponsoring the bill.

“I’m introducing legislation to name the Marshalltown Post Office after Major Scott Nisely who was killed in Iraq. The legislation is a joint effort by Senator Harkin and Congressman Latham,” Grassley says.

The 48-year-old Nisely (photo at right) was one of two Iowa National Guardsman killed in combat last September. The other soldier was 20-year-old Specialist Kampha Sourivong of Iowa City. Both were with the 133th Infantry, based in Iowa Falls.

Grassley says renaming the post office for Nisely would keep his memory alive for many years. He says Nisely was in the Marine Corps for 25 years and worked at the Marshalltown post office for 12 years. Grassley says Nisely took a step down in rank to serve in the Army National Guard from Iowa and “naming the post office for him would be an expression of appreciation for his service and sacrifice for our freedom.”

Nisley took a drop in rank to Staff Sergeant when he joined the Iowa National Guard.
