A small private plane crashed Thursday night and landed upside-down in a soybean field near the Cedar Rapids airport. The 68-year-old pilot and her 12-year-old passenger were hurt. The girl’s injuries were minor. The woman is in an Iowa City hospital. No names were released. Witness Patty Wessels says she could tell something was wrong with the plane before the crash.

Wessels says, "We heard this plane cutting out and it was cutting out a lot and kept flying west. I didn’t know what to do. I knew they were in trouble but I didn’t know for sure what to do." The plane had taken off from the Eastern Iowa Airport just minutes before the crash about 7:30 P-M. The airport was shut down for about a half-hour after the crash. The F-A-A will investigate the crash.
