Many Americans have Snap-on Tool chests in their garages — and they’ve all been built at the plant in the northern Iowa town of Algona. The factory is marking the milestone production this week of its two-millionth red metal rolling tool chest, an incredible achievement, according to plant manager Scott Marienau.
Marienau says the company started building the tool storage units in 1956 and since then, they’ve built two-million of them using 20-million pounds of paint, inserting 24-million drawers and making two-billion welds. He says he has nothing but praise for the workforce of 300 in Algona, the town’s largest employer.
Marienau says the average seniority is 33 years for workers there with seven employees over 40 years at the company, one with 44 years. He says this week’s two-millionth "rolling cab" tool chest is a testament to the workforce, to quality manufacturing and to providing the most valued tool and product solutions to technicians worldwide.
He says the company has an 87-year history of creating innovative products. The Algona plant recently announced a massive expansion project that will include a new warehouse, bringing the total square footage to 470-thousand square feet. Founded in 1920, Snap-on is headquartered in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
