Adair County Memorial Hospital executives hope to finance an addition to the hospital the same way the Greenfield hospital got some of its start-up financing 60 years ago. Hospital volunteer Guy Powell says they’re asking farmers in the area to donate a load of corn for the cause.

"In 1947 when the hospital was built, farmers donated loads of corn…was probably 50 or 60 bushel of ear corn," he says. "…A group of ag producers got together this summer and said, "Why don’t we try this again?’ realizing that a load of corn in 2007 is considerably more bushels." The donation is a tax write-off for farmers, according to Powell.

"It’s just kind of a word-of-mouth campaign," Powell says. They’ve already raised over 800-thousand dollars for the hospital expansion. The 1947 effort raised 80-thousand dollars from Greenfield area farmers.
