Fran McCaffery earned his first victory as Iowa’s basketball coach as the Hawkeyes beat Louisiana-Monroe 68-40. McCaffery says the play on the defensive end was much better than in a season opening loss to South Dakota State. McCaffrey says the other night they only had three steals in the game and he says that means they were not playing defense they way they should. He says in this game they improved and had 10 steals.

McCaffery says there are plenty of areas that need work but he cannot fault the effort of his players. He says the team really wants to win and wants to compete, although he was frustrated at times in the first half and called a time out and had a “rip session” with players. McCaffery says he can get on the players because they are a group that will respond.

The Hawks head to the Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam this weekend.
