The maker of Wells’ Blue Bunny ice cream may be for sale. Le Mars-based Wells Enterprises, the parent company, is looking at options to raise money and a sale could be one of those options.

A company spokesman says, in an emailed statement, that Wells “has begun a strategic process to raise capital to support our growth strategy.” He says the company has “built a strong platform from which to expand our business” and it’s hoped the process can be completed by the end of the year.

The company’s vision is to become the number-one ice cream company in America by 2020. Wells employs more than 2,500 people in Iowa, mostly in Le Mars, and in Utah.

The company produces more than 120-million gallons of ice cream per year.
