A group of airmen are flying to the aid of the Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity organization based in Waterloo. Recruiters and new recruits of the United States Air Force are taking part in a two-day volunteer project. Tech Sergeant Brett Snyder is one of the six airmen who are assigned to roofing duty.

“We’re going to be taking all the shingles off the house and come back (Friday) and put the new shingles on,” Snyder says. Three new recruits from Ottumwa traveled to Waterloo this (Thursday) morning to help with the home rehab project. Snyder says community involvement is important to the Air Force.

“The perception is recruiters are difficult people to approach and they’re out to get people, but we want people to know we are here for the community,” Snyder said. The remodeled home in Waterloo will go to a woman and her son.

“It feels good to give back to people who need your help,” Snyder said. “There’s nothing better than that.” Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is currently working on four housing projects. The organization serves Black Hawk, Bremer and Butler Counties.
