With American flags at half-staff today across Iowa, ceremonies are remembering the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Some Iowa communities are holding memorial services while others are serving free lunches to firefighters, police officers and other first responders as a thank you.

In north-central Iowa, Hamilton County supervisor David Young recalled being in the same board room for a meeting 11 years ago.

“The United States was changed by the events of that day,” says. “It’s very fitting today that we start our meeting with the Pledge in memory of all those that lost their life that day and for the families of those people that lost their life.”

In Des Moines, volunteers planted 3,213 American flags along what they’re calling a Tribute Trail today in a lakeside park, honoring each victim of the Nine Eleven attacks.
