Today is the last full day of what’s been one of Iowa’s hottest, driest summers and forecasters say cold weather is moving in, right on cue, for the arrival of fall. Meteorologist Ken Podrazik, at the National Weather Service, says all of those sweltering 90- and 100-degree days are most certainly behind us now.

“A pretty strong cold front is going to be pushing across the state late tonight into Saturday morning,” Podrazik says. “Tomorrow is going to be one of those nice, chilly, windy fall days.” Autumn officially arrives around 9:49 AM on Saturday and he says it’ll definitely feel like fall as high temperatures tomorrow may only be in the 50s and 60s.

“That cold air will start really settling in with this high pressure moving in,” Podrazik says. “The timing of it is setting up really perfectly for the winds to die off and really let that good, radiational cooling set in.”

Lows across much of Iowa on Saturday night may dip into the 30s, with lower 30s and frost a possibility for parts of northern Iowa.
