A spokesman with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says Grain Processing Corporation in Muscatine will pay a civil penalty for water discharges that violated the Clean Water Act.
“Grain Processing Corporation has agreed to pay a civil penalty of 129-thousand dollars for violations of the Clean Water Act and their national pollutant discharge eliminations systems permit,” according to Ben Washburn.
The EPA says the plant exceeded limits on the release of chemicals in the water by failing to properly monitor releases. “GPC was taking unrepresentative flow measurements, and also was not conduction settleability tests, and failed to maintain all facility control systems in good working order,” Washburn says.
The company has agreed to steps to prevent any more problems. “In addition to paying the penalty, they will be monitoring and correcting their systems to make sure that they are in compliance with the Clean Water Act,” Washburn says. The water from the plant flows into the Mississippi River.
