The number of registered vehicles in Iowa has increased 1% over last year.

Either there are more Iowans driving or Iowans are driving more vehicles.

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports there were 4.2 million vehicles registered in Iowa on June 30, 2014. That’s an increase of just over one percent from the year before. In four of the past five years, there’s been an increase in the number of vehicles licensed to be driven on Iowa roads.

All sorts of vehicles can be licensed, including motor homes, mopeds and motorcycle trailers in addition to passenger vehicles.

Registration fees are calculated based on the vehicle’s age. The state collected $525.5 million in vehicle registration fees last fiscal year. That is a three percent increase compared to what was collected five years before.
