Update 12:20 p.m.:
Des Moines police says they have identified the vehicle and driver in a hit-and- run and are interviewing him. Police say 19-year-old Samuel Kascoutas of Des Moines was driving a 2002 beige Mitsubishi Montero east bound on Ingersoll Ave when he struck 49-year-old Roberta Schulte also of Des Moines.
Schulte was walking in the travel portion of east bound traffic when she was struck. She is still in critical condition at Iowa Methodist Hospital. It is unclear why she was walking in the roadway as investigators have not been able to speak with her.
Kascoutas called the Des Moines Police to admit his involvement stating he panicked after the collision. Charges are pending the completion of this investigation. Police do not believe speed nor intoxication were factors in the accident.

Des Moines Police are investigating a hit-and-run incident that critically injured one person. Police were sent to an intersection on Ingersoll Avenue, west of downtown Des Moines, just after 8 p.m. Sunday on the report of a vehicle that had struck a pedestrian and left the scene without stopping.
The victim, a woman whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The vehicle was described by witnesses as being a small gray or silver SUV, possibly similar in size to a Honda CRV.
Police said the vehicle may have front-end and windshield damage from the impact and the passenger-side headlight may be out.
