One of Iowa’s representatives on the Republican National Committee says “Never Trump” Republicans are welcome “back in the fold.”
“Absolutely. I was sad that they couldn’t get on board initially, I guess, because they had a perfection standard that they were expecting Donald Trump to cross and apparently that didn’t happen,” says Republican National Committeeman Steve Scheffler of West Des Moines.
This summer, Scheffler suggested Republicans who were publicly opposing Donald Trump were attention seekers who preferred burning down the GOP rather than backing the person who won the most votes in Republican primaries and caucuses. Today, Scheffler says it’s time for the GOP to unite and capitalize on Election Night victories and Trump’s Republican critics have a role to play in the party.
“Naturally, you know, we want them back in the party because there’s a lot at stake to save freedom and liberty in this country, so certainly we want them back in the fold,” Scheffler says.
Scheffler is urging Republicans in the state legislature and Republican Governor Terry Branstad to pursue an “aggressive” agenda. Republicans will control both the executive and legislative branches of state government when the legislature convenes in January. Scheffler made his comments today during taping of the “Iowa Press” program that will air Friday at 7:30 p.m. on Iowa Public Television.
