Lottery jackpot dispute over

The fate of a disputed 15-point-nine-million dollar powerball jackpot has apparently been resolved. Iowa Lottery Commissioner Ed Stanek says the jackpot will be paid to 21-year old Timothy Schultz. He is the Urbandale convienance store clerk who originally claimed the prize. Stanek says a co-worker of Schultz’s, 20-year old Sarah Elder, who claimed she had loaned Schultz half of the money to buy the ticket has dropped her claim to the jackpot. The lottery had asked a judge to determine the true ownership of the jackpot since you are required by Iowa law to be 21 to purchase a ticket. Stanek says the lottery had never determined who actually owned the ticket. Stanek says Elder and Schultz reached a confidential agreement that could pay Elder some of the money. He says that information could become known when Schultz files to have themoney paid to a trust he has set up. Stanek says he expects the trust document to be filed late this afternoon (Friday). Stanek says the jackpothas been drawing interest in an account set up by the state treasurer. He says the interest was over 17-thousand dollars Thursday and could be more.Stanek says this is a unique case that the lottery will study and determine if there is a need to ask the state legislature to make changes in thelottery rules.
