Homosexuals lobby legislature for new protections

March 25, 1999 By admin

Over one-hundred Iowans who are homosexual lobbied at the statehouse yesterday for a bill which would ban discrimination against gays and lesbians. Peg Sandeen of Des Moines is a spokesperson for the Iowa Coalition for Human Rights. Sandeen says gays, lesbians, bi-sexual and transgender Iowans are often discriminated against. Legislative leaders say there’s not enough support to pass a bill which would ban discrimination against homosexuals in employment and housing. Last year, the Legislature passed a law which made clear that gay and lesbian marriages will NOT be legally recognized in Iowa.
