University of Iowa researchers are looking for volunteers between the agesof 20 and 30 who frequently smoke pot and who’re willing to be subjected toa few painless tests of their brains during a two-day hospital stay in IowaCity.Dr. Robert Block is a U-of-I professor of anesthesia. He’s heading up thestudy under the hypothesis routine marijuana use may make permanent changesin a brain’s ability to function. Block says subjects who complete all ofthe tests will be paid 480 dollars. For anyone who’s paranoid aboutadmitting to illegal activity, Block says it’ll all be confidential. The study is a “joint” effort between the U-of-I departments of radiology, psychology, psychiatry and social work.
