An 18-million dollar downpayment on three jets to shuttle Pentagon generalsto meetings would be stripped from a defense spending bill under anamendment being filed today by Senator Tom Harkin.The Iowa democrat says his amendment would transfer the 18-million dollarsto a program designed to provide food and nutrition benefits to U-S militaryfamilies overseas.Harkin says the conditions in which some military families are living is a-quote- national shame.On another issue, Senator Tom Harkin says he’s troubled by the Cox Report on allegations ofChinese spying and stealing of U-S nuclear secrets. But the Iowa democratsays we need to proceed with caution.Harkin says no one should jump to any drastic conclusions. He wants to seeF-B-I investigators do a thorough job of looking over the allegations first.Harkin points out the allegations of espionage & lax security go backthrough the Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations.
