Plans for first capitol replica on hold

A plan to build a replica of Iowa’s first territorial capitol on itsoriginal site has been scrapped. Amy Walsh, director of tourism for theBurlington/West Burlington Chamber of Commerce, says a financial agreementwith the owner of the lot fell through.Plans for an archeological excavation on the lot have also been cancelled.Walsh says a new place is being saught to rebuild the oldest of the oldcapitols of Iowa, which was used between 1838 and 1840, when it burned tothe ground. Walsh says the replica will go somewhere in Burlington.Walsh says the plan calls for the reproduction of the state’s firstterritorial capital to be an exact replica.Walsh says it’s not known how much money will be needed to rebuild thecapitol. She says there is no date set for construction to begin.
