Republicans look to referendums as amemndments fail

Republican legislative leaders say they’ll now turn to something Iowa’sdemocrat governor has suggested — a “People’s Referendum.” House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs, says it’stime to explore Governor Vilsack’s idea of submitting every proposed taxincrease to a statewide vote of Iowans. Senate Republican Leader StewartIverson of Dows is ready to put the idea of a “People’s Referendum” to avote. Speaker Siegrist says the amendments’ failure yesterday doesn’treally change the G.O.P. agenda.
