The class 2A semifinal round is underway at the boys state baseballtournament in Marshalltown. Algona Garrigan broke open a close game byscoring eight runs in the top of the seventh inning as the top rankedGolden Bears downed Mount Vernon 12-5. Garrigan pitcher Mark Anderson helped his own cause in the seventh with a solo homer, later in the inning he drove in a pair of runs with a double. On the mound, Anderson went the distance surrendering nine hits. Anderson saysit was a good feeling to take the mound after the eight run seventh inning.Anderson says the heat was not quite as bad as Wednesday’s first round.Mount Vernon coach Jeff Schwiebert (shwee-burt) says Garrigan took over in the final inning.Schwiebert says considering this team started the season 4-10, it was a tremendous finish to the season.Also in the class 2A semifinals in Marshalltown Nate Baas slammed a two outgrand slam homer in the top of the seventh to lead sixth ranked CouncilBluffs St. Albert past Ogden 6-3.The Class 1A Semifinals are underwayin Carroll. Southeast Warren defeated Lenox 10-4 to advance to the 1Achampionship tomorrow. Southeast Warren improves 26 and 12 on the season. Lenox ends its season with a 33 and 5 record.In the second game LeMars Gehlen beat SCMT Sheffield 15-3 in a game thatwas stopped in six innings. LeMars and Southeast Warren will play for thetitle tomorrow.In 3A, top ranked Davenport Assumption got by Cedar Rapids Xavier 15-9 andKnoxville and Spencer will conclude their semifinal this morning after thegame was suspensded due to a storm. In the class 4a title game inMarshalltown tenth ranked West Des moines dowling matches up against Ankeny.dowling catcher Zach Dillon hit two home runs in the same inning, a two runshot and a grand slam, part of a ten run third as the tenth ranked Maroonsgot by 5th ranked Sioux City North 16-12.Ankeny finished the regular season 18-22 but the Hawks are a victory awayfrom a title as they downed Cedar Rapids Washington 8-6 in the 4Asemifinals. Ankeny coach Mel Murken says there is no simple answer for whythey have put together the post season run.
