The semi-final round in class 1-A highlights tonight’s action at the state high school softball tournament in Fort Dodge.Big games are nothing new for Woodward Granger. The top-ranked and defendingchampion Hawks enter the semifinal round at the tournament for the seventhconsecutive year. But their success over the years has also made them atarget and coach Jeff Cupp says that was evident in their come-from-behind first round victory on Monday night against Armstrong-Ringsted.Woodward-Granger right fielder Lisa Tiernan (teer-nun) provided the game winning hit for the Hawks in the comeback victory over Armstrong-Ringstedand says the experience they have gained over the years at the tournamenthelps them when the game is close.North Polk pitcher Jodi Christensen says it doesn’t matter who the opponent is, they are happy to be in the semifinal round.In the other semifinal round game, second-ranked Alburnett takes on numbereight Earlham. Alburnett edged Wapello 3-2 in the first round. Coach Kevin Johnson says with tournament jitters out of the way, he expects his team to play a more polished game.It is Alburnett’s first tournament appearance since 1961 and Johnson says the lack of experience showed in their opening round victory over Wapello, especially with sophomore pitcher Amy Rowe.Earlham advanced to the semis with a victory over South Winneshiek.
