Dragon boats hit the water in Des Moines

Central Iowans can experience some unusual aspects of Chinese culture todaywith the Greater Des Moines Dragon Boat Festival. The event featuresdancing, food, martial arts demonstrations and races of huge human-poweredboats on the Raccoon River.Joyce Durlam (DUR-lum) is executive director of the Greater Des MoinesSports Authority, which is putting on the Festival. She says the large andcolorful dragon boats have a long history.Durlam says there are all sorts of other events besides the races, whichstarted this morning at 8 a-m.The Festival is underway at Raccoon River Park near Valley Junction in WestDes Moines.
