Governor’s forum focuses on crop insurance

The National Governor’s Association forum on Ag policy is underway in Amestoday. Governors from around the country have sent about 80 representatives to themeeting and they are joined by a few farmers and university professors. Thediscussion this morning centered on how to manage risk through the use ofcrop insurance. A top congressional aide says there’s a great need to expandthe federal crop insurance program. William O’Conner is the staff directorof the U-S House Ag committee. O’conner says the private sector insurancecompanies need to step forward.He says many farmers can’t get crop insurance.O’Connnor says controlling crop production is not the answer and was afailure in the 80’s. This afternoon’s discussion will focus on biotechnologyin seeds and livestock.
