About one-hundred elderly people from across the state are in Des Moinestoday for the opening of the Older Iowans Legislature. The group doesn’t have any formal powers but will debate and pass a seriesof mock bills that’ll be forwarded on as recommendations to the reallegislature. The elder representatives are focusing on 31 measures, allrevolving around seniors’ rights.Mary Ann Young at the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs says most of thedelegates are in their 70s and 80s.Measures being debated include mandatory drivers education classes for peopleover 70 and using some of the state’s tobacco settlement money for eldercare.
