Under the heading “The Great Escape,” fire departments and Red Crosschapters across Iowa are now marking Fire Prevention Week. PatrickBaughenbaugh is a Des Moines fire inspector who’s teaching people to learnnot to burn.Dozens of fire & Red Cross officials will be taking their messages aboutfire safety into Iowa schools this week. Baughenbaugh says he’ll be tellingkids they need to practice how to get out of their homes if there’s a fire.He says fire safety isn’t just for kids. Baughenbaugh says many adults,especially parents, could use a refresher course on what to do in case ablaze breaks out in their homes.Once everyone is at the pre-designated meeting place, he says to go to aneighbor’s home and call 9-1-1 and never to re-enter the home until afirefighter says it’s safe.
