Although the fall harvest is on the minds of Iowa farmers, they’re beingencouraged to think about the coming winter too. Officials with the IowaDepartment of Transportation are working to get farmers to leave eight rowsof corn in the fields in certain areas to break the blowing snow.Dennis Burkheimer is the D-O-T’s winter operations administrator. He saysstate crews will also come out and put up wood or plastic snow fences.Burkheimer says farmers are being approached this week by D-O-T staff inareas where roads have drifted over in past winters.Burkheimer says the fence issue needs to be addressed before the winds ofwinter start whipping.Farmers who leave corn standing along roadsides after harvest to make a snowbarrier will be paid up to two-dollars-40 cents a bushel.
