Six-hundred-50 teenage Iowa girls are in Ames today for a conference whichencourages the young women to excell in science and math. Conferencecoordinator Linda Dutton says sixth through ninth graders will participate.Dutton says unfortunately, girls have few women role models in science andengineering.Girls often do well in science and math until high school when Dutton saysthere’s big pressure to “dummy up.”The young women will learn about careers as an engineer, architect, biologist or veterinarian.Dutton says there’s such interest in the program that I-S-U hosts six suchconferences each year — but is still forced to turn away hundreds of girlsbecause of a lack of space.
