Immigrants plan vigil

November 2, 1999 By admin

Latin American immigrants plan a vigil tonight to bring attention to the deaths of immigrants trying to escape their home countries to a new life.Kathleen McQuillen of the American Friends Service Committee serves as the spokesperson for the immigrants. She says the immigrants want to make it understood that it’s a worldwide phenomenon.McQuillen says only a small portion of the deaths worldwide happen in the United States, but that doesn’t make it less of a problem. She says the U-S needs to take some responsibility for the problem. The group will meet in Des Moines tonight near a bridge on the Des Moines River. They will hold a short ceremony and then cross the bridge in silence in memory of those who have died while trying to cross the border to freedom. The vigil is one of several such ceremonies nationwide today.
