Vandals hit veterans monument

November 17, 1999 By admin

It seems inconceivable that a crime against Veterans on Veterans Day would happen in Independence, Iowa. But that’s what occured. Someone stole a “tomb of the unknowns” monument from a cemetary in the northeast Iowa town. It styled to be similar to the “Tomb of the Unknowns” at Arlington National Cemetary. Independence police chief Mike McConnell says they have no leads.McConnell says the stone weighs two-hundred pounds, and would have been difficult to steal. The stolen stone is worth five-hundred dollars. Local vets say it’s priceless, though.
