Ice not strong enough yet for activity

December 20, 1999 By admin

Bodies of water have finally started to freeze over in parts of the state. Jim Wahl with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources office in Clear Lake says in many cases the ice is not thick enough to support recreational activities like ice fishing. Wahl says you need at least 4 inches of ice.Wahl expects the thickness of the ice to be somewhat smaller than past winters.Wahl says if you fall through the ice into the water, you can die from hypothermia.Clear Lake itself officially iced over on Thursday of this past week missing the record for the latest ice over by only four days.
