2000 legislature set to take action

State legislators have returned to Des Moines to resume work on a variety of fronts, including budget cuts. The Iowa Legislature is set to gavel back in session today at 10 o’clock. Among their first tasks will be trimming about 30 million dollars from the present state budget, according to House Speaker Brent Siegrist, a republican from Council Bluffs. Seven million is in ongoing budget cuts and Siegrist says they’ll try to find more.Siegrist says education initiatives are at the top of the agenda.House Democrat Leader David Schrader says as they did last year, democrats will push to use state money to fix schools. And Schrader says democrats want to help reduce violence in schools, too.
