A six-year study by an Iowa anti-gun group finds the number of Iowans killed in accidental shootings could have been cut in half by a trigger lock law. The study by Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence probed the 43 unintentional gun deaths reported statewide from 1993-98. The group’s president, John Johnson, says about half of the victims were children. In his Condition of the State Address last month, Governor Vilsack proposed trigger locks be made mandatory on all guns sold in Iowa. Johnson says the bill has been drafted and sent to legislative leaders, but still has not been acted upon and has not been assigned to any committee.Johnson says quality trigger locks cost between ten and 15 dollars.
