Bill would test welfare recipients for drugs

February 25, 2000 By admin

Iowans who receive welfare benefits would be subject to random drug testing under legislation advanced yesterday by a House Committee. Human Resources Committee Chairman Dan Boddicker says his primary goal is to make homes safer for kids.Boddicker, who’s a republican from Tipton, says taxpayers do not want to support drug users on welfare. The bill requires a drug test for all adults who apply for welfare — and those who get welfare now would be subject to random tests. Those who test positive would be placed in substance abuse treatment.Critics say parents who are addicted to drugs won’t sign up for welfare, leaving their kids even hungrier and without medical care.
