Waterloo city leaders want state financing for a major city “facelift” and they traveled to Des Moines yesterday to make their case. Legislators and the Governor are considering creation of a 300-million dollar fund which would be handed out for community projects around the state. Waterloo Mayor John Rooff says his city needs that kind of help to make big improvements, fast. Rooff says the centerpiece of Waterloo’s revitalization plan is an exposition center. The plan also includes a baseball stadium and a “riverwalk” mall along the Cedar River.Rooff says six major businesses in Waterloo; John Deere, I-B-P, Hunt Wesson, Waterloo Industries, Mid-American Energy and Birch Manufacturing, have pledged financial support for the downtown project.
