A bill which seeks to undo the Governor’s executive order which bars discrimination against state workers who are gay or have “gender identity” issues remains alive. The House Judiciary Committee passed the bill this afternoon. Representative Steve Sukup (soo-kup), a republican from Dougherty, says Vilsack is trying to make law on his own.Representative Dick Myers, a democrat from Iowa City, says Republicans were just “gay bashing” by not supporting the Governor’s effort to treat all employees fairly.Representative Don Shoultz, a democrat from Waterloo, says the bill will be vetoed by Governor Vilsack.Governor Vilsack has called the bill an “exercise in futility” since he will veto it and Republican legislators will have to go to court if they hope to pursue the issue. Nevertheless, legislative leaders say the bill will be passed by the House in two weeks.
