Next Monday’s arrival of spring isn’t the only reason Iowa bicycle stores are seeing an upswing in sales. The continued rise in gasoline prices may be contributing to people looking to pedal power as an alternative, according to Cedar Falls bike shop owner Russ Clarke.Just like it was during the energy crisis of the 1970s, Clarke says more people are turning to riding bikes for something other than leisure or exercise.Clarke expects bicycle sales to continue rising as long as gas prices stay so high — and they’re predicted to stay high through summer.Gas prices in Iowa are averaging around a dollar-50, about 50 cents a gallon higher than they were a year ago.
