Governor says Republican budget will increase tuition

March 24, 2000 By admin

Governor Vilsack says Republican budget plans may lead to much higher tuition at the state’s three public universities. Last week, the Presidents of Iowa, Iowa State and U-N-I said the G-O-P’s budget outline would damage the quality of education at the state-supported universities, forcing administrators to increase tuition — perhaps double-digit increases.Vilsack says the state can’t afford to push tuition too high as it will keep good young people from coming to the state.Vilsack says quality universities are the key to moving the state forward.Republican legislators say they intend to spend more on the Regents universities next year, and a reduction in the budget increase Governor Vilsack recommended is not a cut.
