American pork lands in China

April 5, 2000 By admin

The first shipment of American pork to China has been received in Shanghai. Leaders of the Iowa-based National Pork Producers Council say it’s an exciting beginning to what could be a very profitable venture.Barb Determan is President-Elect of the Council and farms in the Early area of Sac County. The company that shipped the first pork to China did not want to be identified, but Determan says it’s possible the meat came from Iowa. She sees the new trade agreement with China as a big plus for the Hawkeye State.More than one-quarter of all the pork produced in the U-S is produced in Iowa. Determan says it’s the first of what will no doubt be many, many shipments of U-S pork products to the largest nation on earth. The first shipment of American pork to China was only about 250 pounds of meat — ribs and sausages.
