Input urged on packer price reporting plan

April 6, 2000 By admin

Iowa livestock producers are encouraged to get on-line and check out the proposed rules on mandatory livestock price reporting. Iowa Congressman Tom Latham says the deadline for taking public input on the rules is April 17th and he wants everyone who may be effected to have a say.Latham, a republican from Alexander, says the new rules will force large-scale livestock producers to report a variety of transaction information several times a day. If all goes smoothly, Latham expects the price reporting program to be in place within a few months.Facilities that would fall under the new rules include those that annually slaughter 125-thousand cattle, 100-thousand hogs or 75-thousand lambs. For more information, the proposed rules are on the World Wide Web at: www.house.gov/latham
