Vigils seek to bring awareness to rape

Iowans will gather in 20 cities tonight to comfort each other and try to raise awareness about the crime of rape. The second-annual statewide Sexual Assault Candlelight Vigil is scheduled for 7 p-m.Nancy Tyson is outreach coordinator for the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She says there are now 31 sexual assault crisis centers in Iowa and 20 of them are holding vigils tonight. Tyson is organizing the event in Des Moines at Bethel A-M-E Church.Tyson says Corlis Moody, director of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, will be addressing the Des Moines group on the topic “How do we spiritually respond to sexual violence?” Tyson says awareness of sexual assaults and the effort to stop them is growing in Iowa. She’s generally satisfied with how state lawmakers and the Governor are responding to the issue.For more information on vigils, call (515) 244-7424.
