Tens of thousands of Iowans are missing out on a variety of health care and other benefits they earned as veterans — or as spouses of veterans. An event in Davenport today is designed to fill them in on what they’re due. Kirt Sickels is a spokesman for the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is hosting the first-ever Veterans Fair from 9 a-m until 9 p-m. He says there will be both a job fair for veterans as well as educational seminars on how to obtain benefits. Sickels says there are at least 160-thousand veterans in the eastern third of Iowa and only about one-third of them are taking advantage of their benefits. Today’s event is at the Davenport River Center. For Iowans who think they may be due some veterans benefits, Sickels recommends a statewide toll free number: 800-637-0128.
