Magazine says ISU and Iowa should improve in football

June 8, 2000 By admin

It’s summer and that means the college football preview magazines are hitting the newsstands. Anthony Gimino, Associate Editor for Lindy’s magazine, says Iowa State will make a run at that elusive winning season. He says they need to win a couple of close games and cut down on their turnovers.Gimino says a 4-0 September record would help the Cyclone bid for a winning season. While the game with Iowa will draw most of the attention, Gimino says a September 9th game at home against UNLV will be tougher than expected. He says quarterback Jason Thomas transferred to UNLV from USC and will give UNLV’s offense a boost.Gimino says to have a chance at a winning record, the Cyclones must improve their turnover margin which ranked last in the Big-12 in 1999.Lindy’s picks the Iowa Hawkeyes to finish 10th in the Big-10. Gimino expects the Hawkeyes to be improved over last year’s 1-10 record, but he says the problem is the Big Ten is the country’s toughest conference.Gimino says with Kalill Hill at wide receiver and Ladell Betts at running back the Hawkeyes have weapons, the problem could be the play of the offensive and defensive lines.Gimino says the first season for Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz can be dismissed. How Ferentz is judged begins this season. He says if the team progresses, it’s a good sign.Iowa opens August 26th against Kansas State. Iowa State opens August 31st at home against Ohio.
