Woman’s drive into river was a murder/suicide

July 11, 2000 By admin

Council Bluffs police now say the death of a woman and three children in the Missouri River was a murder/suicide.Police say 33-year old Karen Duncan of Council Bluffs drove her truck into the Missouri River, killing herself and her three children. The children were identified as 8-year-old Zachary Duncan and twin 5-year-olds Derrick and Dylan. Sergeant Ray Mabbitt says family members told them at the scene they thought Duncan wanted to kill herself.Mabbitt says Duncan left a suicide note at her home. He says Duncan and her husband were having some marital problems, but he doesn’t know what else may’ve led Duncan to take her life and those of her children. The suicide note left by Duncan said, “Your kids are in God’s hands now.”Mabbitt says it is a tough situation for the community. The bodies of Duncan and two children were recovered early this morning, and the third child’s body was found downriver.
