Governor pushes teacher pay plan at school board gathering

Governor Tom Vilsack spoke to hundreds of school board members and business leaders last night in Cedar Rapids to push his teacher pay plans. Vilsack wants to boost teacher pay, and tie it — in some way — to student performance in the classroom.Vilsack says beginning teachers earn about eight thousand dollars less a year than their fellow college graduates.Vilsack says decisions must be made soon — by legislators as well as school board members — to raise teacher salaries.Vilsack’s Friday night speech was delivered to the Central Region of the National Association of School Boards.
