Details revealed in high-profile child abuse case

Attorneys revealed key details in their defense of a Spirit Lake woman during opening statements today.Attorneys for Heidi Watkins say she will testify in her own defense. Watkins is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her two-year old daughter, Shelby Duis. Defense attorneys say Watkins’ boyfriend, Jessie Wendelsdorf, killed the girl. Wendelsdorf was found not guilty of murder and abuse charges last month in a trial in Dickinson County. Testimony got underway late this morning in Algona following opening statements.
