Young Democrats look for experience in LA

August 14, 2000 By admin

Democrats are trying to cultivate young voters in many ways, including the system which sends “junior delegates” to the party’s national convention. Sisters Maura and Kally Walsh of Des Moines are among the bright-eyed newcomers. Maura is 14-years-old and older sis Kally is 16. Kally says she wanted to get some experience and see what the convention is like. The girls’ dad has worked on several campaigns, including Bill Bradley’s Iowa effort. Sixteen-year-old Eric Bagley of Mason City is Iowa’s other “youth delegate.” Bagley says he’ll be a convention page on the floor doing “whatever they tell me to do.” He’s excited about the job, as he says you have to start somewhere.Bagley says he eventually wants to move up to being candidate for office.Bagley says this convention will give him a chance to see how things work.
