Watkin’s fate now in the hands of Judge

August 18, 2000 By admin

Testimony concluded this morning in the Heidi Watkins murder trial. Watkins is accused of killing her two-year old daughter, Shelby Duis. Prosecutors called a Des Moines psychiatrist to the stand to counter defense testimony that Watkins has a series of mental problems. Dr. Michael Taylor testified that Watkins did not suffer from any mental abnormalities in December of 1999 or in January of 2000. Duis died in January. The prosecution presented its closing arguments this morning.Prosecutor Charles Thoman said Watkins embarked on a campaign of deception after Duis’ death and tried to conceal evidence. He also tried to shoot down the defense claim that mental problems prevented Watkins from knowing what was going on, saying it was a defense without merit. The defense gave its closing arguments this afternoon and the case is now in the hands of the Judge.
