UNI takes new approach to violence against women

October 3, 2000 By admin

The University of Northern Iowa has won a half-million dollar federal grant to find a new approach to reducing violence against women on campus. The director of UNI’s Women’s Studies program says traditional methods in dealing with violence on college campuses have focused on helping the victims. Annette Lynch says this new program stresses prevention and focuses on freshmen. She says men and women are targeted in the training, but part of the program involves developing male role models on campus. National expert Jackson Katz will speak at a statewide men’s conference in Ames later this month as part of the UNI program. The grant for the 20-month project comes from the U-S Department of Justice.
