The American people deserve to see our nation’s high court in action, according to Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley. He’s sending a letter to the Chief Justice of the U-S Supreme Court to allow T-V coverage of the Florida election matter, which is scheduled for arguments on Friday.Grassley introduced legislation last year to allow broadcast coverage of what goes on in federal courts, including the Supreme Court. He says his “Sunshine in the Courtroom Act” is consistent with the founding fathers’ intent that trials be held in front of as many people as choose to attend.Currently, cameras are banned in all federal district courts, but cameras are allowed in the state courts of 47 states, including Iowa. Grassley held a hearing in September to draw attention to his legislation that’d allow the photographing, electronic recording, broadcasting and televising of federal court proceedings. He says television worked well in the Florida Supreme Court and he thinks it would work well in most courts.Grassley is a republican. His letter to Justice William Rehnquist was co-signed by Senator Charles Schumer, a democrat from New York.
