Iowa just finished the snowiest month on record and one of the coldest Decembers in history. It’s a critical time for birds, according to Sue Wells, executive director of the National Bird-Feeding Society. Wells urges Iowans to pay attention to their backyard bird feeders. She says you need to keep your bird feeders full of seeds and free of snow as it can mean the difference between life and death for the frail feathered creatures.Wells says black oil sunflower is the favorite seed for most backyard birds, while suet attracts many other sorts of birds. She says it’s very inexpensive to pick up and use a small water heater to keep birdbaths from freezing over. For more information, consult the website at “www.birdfeeding.org”.
